Coke Zero 400 - 7/4/09

Michael Waltrip and David Reutimann were collected in a wreck midway through the Coke Zero 400, tonight's Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. The #55 Napa Auto Parts Camry and #00 Aaron's Dream Machine finished 37th (36 laps down) and 36th (33 laps down) respectively. Marcos Ambrose brought the #47 Kingsford Toyota home in 6th.

Qualifying was again cancelled due to rain. The field was set according to owners points, with Mikey rolling off 29th, David 14th, and Marcos 18th. The #55's pit box was the 8th coming onto pit road.

"Hello? 1, 2, 3, 4," Mikey came on the radio at 8:07pm ET.

"I got you, loud and clear," a crew member replied.

"How about now?" Mikey asked

"All right, very nice," said crew chief Bootie Barker.

Kyle Petty gave the call to start engines at 8:08pm.

"Okay, Michael, you hear me yet?" Bootie asked.

"Loud and clear."

Bootie told Mikey to turn his B fans on. "As you can see from your dash, let's go with 4700." He said they'd adjust as the race goes, if necessary. "Tyrone, you up there, man?"

"Yeah, it would probably help if I got off the Nationwide channel."

Bootie reviewed pit road speed with Ty.

"10-4, 4700. What's your first gear, coming off the pit box?" Ty asked.

"Hold on, I've got it," Bootie replied.

"74," said Mikey.

"I got it. 7400."

"Does D-Dub have a radio yet?" Ty asked.

"He doesn't yet," Bootie replied. "He has one, but he doesnn't have it on yet."

"Yeah, DW hooked up and ready to go!" Mikey's older brother Darrell responded.

"You want to call the green?" Ty asked. A little while later, he said, "The Waltrips have NASCAR, Daytona 500 wins, team ownerships, Leroy, and boogity boogity boogity."

"An elite group, for sure," Bootie added.

DW said they had a hold on this joint. "And we're going to take something home with us tonight."

"Okay, Michael. I'm looking real good. I see the 7 real good. I've got lights in my way. All right, I see you now well. That will be seven away. 4, 3, 2, 1. Got the 16 behind us, 9 in front of us, and the 2. We will have an open stall behind the 16." Bootie said he'd tell Mikey who's comingn aroundn.

"Allrighty," Mikey said. "Y'all have a good night on pit road. We'll hold up our end out here."

Bootie said they'd concentrate on not making mistakes "and let you go racing that last third."

"Weather update.. Bootie, what do you have? Anything threatening?" Ty asked.

"No. We don't have anything yet. We'll definitely keep an eye on it though."

"It's a beautiful site, boys, just live in the moment," Mikey said. "Appreciate the opportunity for what you love to do. Don't take it for granted. Thank you for putting me in a car I can win with, and have a good night."

"Thank you, Michael," Bootie replied.

Ty warned Mikey about jet dryers just off Turn 2. "Give them room. It's cool to see the #43 going through Turn 2. It reminds me of that picture you see of the #43 going through Turn 2 with that jet fighter in the background."

"Everybody, one to go, one to go," Ty noted.

"Ty, DW's goinng to call it, okay?"

"Yes, sir."

"Hey, Mikey, stay focus, okay, buddy? I know a good restrictor plate racer when I see one, and you are one of the best," DW said.

"10-4," Mikey replied. "Have fun in there, and I'll have fun out here."

Ty said Bootie would be able to see trash on the grill better than he could, "since you're at the right level."

"10-4, absolutely."

The green flag waved at 8:21 pm with Tony Stewart leading the field.

"All right, be ready, be ready. Green flag, buddy, green flag! Go go go!" DW exclaimed.

"Everybody's rolling, two by two," Ty picked up the spotting. "Still two by two. You've got the 6 and the 98. 7 car's still outside, still two by two. Inside to your bumper, 09's looking outside. Still outside on your corner, still there. Still out there, still outside, two by two. Clear up if you want it, clear up if you want it. Closing up, closingn up, coming outside."

"I'm good, Ty, just look ahead," Mikey said.

"That's what I figured."

Mikey was 31st on lap 2.

"You're all clear. Just letting you know if you want it. Clear one back."

On lap 3, he was 34th. David was 36th, and Marcos was 12th.

"Are your temps okay, Michael?"

"Twelve o'clock water, one o'clock oil."

"10-4."

Ty told Mikey the white car was the last one in line.

Denny Hamlin led a lap before Kurt Busch took the lead on lap 5. Meanwhile, Dave Blaney went to the garage.

"Hang on the best you can." Ty said two cars in front of Mikey would be pitting soon.

"I'm fine. Just look ahead of me."

Mikey was 37th on lap 5. David was 38th, and Marcos was 11th. When Hamlin reclaimed the lead on lap 6, the #55 dropped to 40th. David was 34th, and Marcos was still 11th.

"There you go. You're all clear. You've got the 16 in your mirror," Ty said.

Mikey was 39th on lap 7.

"Clear. Clear there. Clear."

On lap 8, Mikey was 36th. David was 32nd, and Marcos continued to ride 11th. One lap later, Mikey was 33rd.

"Clear, all clear."

Mikey was 32nd on lap 10. David was 30th, Marcos 11th.

"82's still outside on your corner. Still there," Ty warned. "Clear there two back."

On lap 11, Mikey was 31st.

"Clear there, clear. Clear there, all clear. Got one all the way at the top."

Lap 12 saw Mikey move into 30th.

"Three-wide, two-wide. Still at the top. Still on your quarter, still on your quarter. Spin in front of you. They're off the track, they're off the track. Caution's out."

The first caution was on lap 14. Mark Martin had cut off Matt Kenseth and turned into the wall nose-first.

Bootie asked about temps.

"Twelve o'clock, eleven o'clock," Mikey replied and elaborated.

Bootie said they'd stop for four tires. "How's your car?"

"It's awesome, awesome," Mikey replied.

"That's great. The 16 is behind you. The 9... I'm looking. For some reason, I lost him," Bootie then said Mikey would have a clean entry. "4700, second gear."

Ty told Mikey where he should line up.

"What's that mean about the 07?" Mikey asked.

"They didn't mention him."

"4700 and second. Shift into first when the left side drops. Pump your brakes a little bit."

Ty told Mikey he was seven past the turn-in to the garage.

Cars pit, and Kurt Busch overslid his box. Bootie guided Mikey to his.

"One lane one lane one lane. 12 coming 12 coming 12 coming," Bootie warned. "There you go."

Stewart was the first driver off pit road.

"Hey, Bootie, good job on your race car. From what I'm watching up here, there are a lot of people struggling. A lot of people have to go up top. They're really struggling," Ty said.

Bootie thanked Ty and said it was a testament to the entire organisation. "Michael, keep doing what you're doing."

"Should be position 20, outside," Ty said. He asked for Bootie to confirm.

"It's listing us as 23rd right now, and this is what I have. You know how it is."

"Well, we're 20th in line."

"Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't know if it's up to date or not."

Ty told Mikey to line up behind the 2. "Whatever he does."

Stewart led the restart on lap 17. Mikey was 23rd, David 17th, and Marcos 4th.

"Pace car's off. Be ready. Green green green. Everybody's rolling, still outside. Our line is going to be coming outside, outside. Still all the way at the top."

Mikey was 22nd one lap into the run.

"Go ahead. You've got the 43 stuck in the middle, all by himself. Two by two, two by two."

"Three wide, three wide. Two wide, two wide."

David and Mikey were 22nd and 24th respectively on lap 19. The #55 appeared to be pushing the #00.

"Outside. He's got the 98, and he's got the 96. Still outside, still there. Inside, he's right there to your bumper. Clear low, clear low. Clear up two back, clear up two back. All clear, all clear."

Mikey was 25th on lap 21. "Still outside. They've got all the help. 00's still out there. Clear up behind the 12 if you want it, clear two back. Closing up, closing up. 1 car closing up. Clear behind him. He's still out there with help, bud. Clear the 1, clear. Two back to the 29 up top. Outside, all the way to the middle. To the middle. Clear low. Wow, nice job. Still outside."

On lap 24, Patrick Carpentier went to the garage. Mikey was 23rd, David 20th, and Marcos 17th.

"Still outside, to your corner. Still outside. You've got a little bit of help coming." Ty warned Mikey about the top line stacking up. "Just be aware. Still outside, outside."

"A bit tight on this set," Mikey reported.

"Okay, 10-4," Bootie replied.

"Still outside, outside," Ty said. "Clear onne back, one back. I'm just nervous about that crowd in front of us. I mean, some of those guys just keep going three wide and banging and banging, so just be careful. Outside, outside."

"Man, I think I need to get out of this, Ty," Mikey considered.

Ty agreed. "I didn't to tell you what to do. You have a good race car. If they settle down, we'll go get 'em again. We'll see."

Mikey dropped back to 31st on lap 27. David was 27th, and Marcos was 14th.

"Still outside though, still outside. Okay, you're all clear. Still there barely to your corner. The 29 coming to push. Clear."

Casey Mears spun on lap 28. David Stremme went down the track and took out Mears' #07. Mears' rear hit the wall. The second caution was out.

"In front of you, right in front of you. You see him, all the way to the apron. Stay up. Caution's out, caution's out."

"It's just skaty in the front, skaty in the front on this set."

Bootie said they'd pit the seconnd time by and would drop the right front half a pound.

"We're going to do what?" Mikey asked after he burped.

Bootie explained that he wanted to wait for the big group to pit, then they'd pit.

Ty said it was a quickie yellow. "We're staying out if they all come, right?"

"If it's a quicky yellow, we can't," Mikey replied.

Bootie said to come pit. But then Mikey never pit.

"I just decided you were right, Bootie," Mikey said. "I wasn't going to be in any hurry anyway. It's going to be one to go. It's no big deal."

"Just let me know. I almost had a heart attack! I thought, 'Oh, hell, I missed him!'"

"I just, I get what you're saying. There are just too many cars, annd I was near the back anyway. So I just decided to wait like you said."

"It's okay. I was just looking for you.

"Mikey, I thought I was going to have to give him CPR, and I don't want to mess with an ugly guy like this. So don'nt do that, man," DW said.

Mikey suggested a left rear and right front adjustment.

Bootie called for a whole pound. "I don't want to get it all right now. I don'nt want to get you free in this pack. A lot of people are screaming this way."

The #55 pit.

"Nice stop, men. Nice and smooth like that all night," Bootie praised the team.

"You're going to line up behind that 34, whatever he does, inside or out," Ty said. "I would have said something about him, but I don'nt know what he's doing."

Mikey and Ty talked about a car doing something illegal, possibly John Andretti's #34.

"That's called moving up to pit. It's against the rules."

"Yeah, they're goinng to slap him here," Ty said. He called the green.

Racing resumed on lap 32 with Stewart leading, Mikey in 35th, David 22nd, and Marcos 28th.

"Michael, we had some slight bubbles on the left front. The right front looks fine," Bootie reported.

"You're all clear there, clear," Ty said."

Mikey was 38th on lap 33. David was 25th and Marcos 24th. Denny Hamlin was back in the lead. Mikey was 37th on lap 34.

"Clear, clear."

One lap later, the #55 was 36th.

"Right in front of you. You see what's going on. They figured it out. Keep going, keep going," Ty said on lap 38. He said somebody had a quarter panel knocked in. "Clear there one back, clear there one back."

Mikey was 35th on lap 39. He said something about the dumbest thing he's ever seen.

"10-4," said Bootie. "This is eleven laps on your tires, eleven."

"It doesn't feel like anything like we started." Mikey said there was a problem with the splitter.

"10-4. It's hitting the splitter, is that's what's going on?"

"No. Just pushing. But it has hit the ground. I don't know if it messed it up or what."

"10-4."

Mikey was 34th on lap 43.

"Clear there, clear."

On lap 46, Mikey was 33rd.

"09's still there. 09's going to have a run outside. Outside, outside. Two more looking outside, inside. Got a pusher with him. Still down there. Still there."

Mikey was 31st on lap 47. Meanwhile, Stewart reclaimed the lead.

"Clear, clear."

Mikey was 33rd on lap 48.

"Seventeen laps on your tires, Michael," Bootie said.

"Looking low, inside. Clear. You've got one trying to look again."

"I just don't have a front end on my car anymore," Mikey complained.

"Michael, we had two sets of tire codes that were different," Bootie said. "This was one of them. The next one will be back where you started."

"Break it down, Mikey. Where are you hurting? Getting in? On exit?" DW asked.

"Plowing off, plowing on exit," Mikey replied.

"10-4."

"Got a push coming. 09 still there. Clear all clear. Clear two back, bud."

On lap 52, Mikey was 32nd. David was 19th, and Marcos was 21st.

"22 laps on your tires," said Bootie.

"Just hang in there a little bit longer, bud. They're not getting too far away from us. We're okay," Ty encouraged.

Matt Kenseth pit on lap 57 for a flat.

"You've got somebody with a flat right front tire on the apron. No caution, no caution. There's debris all over the place. They've got to call one. Okay, caution's out."

The third caution was on lap 58. Sam Hornish Jr lost a tire, and foam was coming out of his car. Mikey was 30th at the time. David was 13th, and Marcos was 15th.

Bootie asked if Mikey still had the same issue.

"Yes."

"Okay, man. Your temperatures look okay?"

"12 o'clock, 11 o'clock."

Bootie said the tires would be the same from now on. Again, he wanted Mikey to pit the second time by.

Ty told Bootie there was a lot of debris to pick up. "We can stay out an extra lap and pick up those five bonus points."

"10-4. Yeah," Bootie replied.

"Well, pit road is going to be closed this time." Ty told Mikey about the #17 and #77 both blowing tires.

Bootie warned Mikey about the rain that was coming. "Tell us when you want us to pull the trigger." "Well, if you don't get this car fixed, there won't be no trigger to pull." DW told Mikey that he needed to give more information. "What's it need?" "Well, when they throw you a curve like they have different tire codes," Mikey complained. He said it needed more left side grip.

"10-4. That gives us some good information."

"Ty, if the 39 took the lead, and he pits this time, then I can stay out, because it won't be one to go."

"10-4, 10-4."

"That was a question, not a statement," Mikey said he couldn't tell.

Bootie couldn't either. He and Bootie agreed that they'd stay out.

DW asked if Mikey needed those five bonus points.

"We need five points. We need to get all that we can. We're going to be last anyway, so we might as well."

The field came to one to go.

"4700, bud. 4700," said Ty.

Bootie guided Mikey to the box. "All the way, all the way. 47, 47."

"4700 to the line."

"Is there a right rear rubber we can shove in this thing?" Mikey asked.

Bootie said they could do that.

"I wish somebody would suggest this shit so I wouldn't have to. It's pushing its ass off on exit," Mikey said he needed to be given options.

Bootie wanted to see what these code of tires do and also told Mikey the adjustment he made.

Juan Pablo Montoya was blackflagged for having something hanging on his car. He came to pit road.

"All right, bud, be ready. Pace car's coming off," Ty said. "Green green green. Everybody's rolling. Clear there, whatever you want. All clear."

Matt Kenseth led the restart on lap 62. Mikey was 30th, David 12th, Marcos 14th.

"Inside, inside. All the way at the bottom, all the way at the bottom. Both sides. Still both sides. Clear on the bottom, clear on the bottom, one back. Still outside on your corner. Still outside on your corner."

Mikey was 31st on lap 63. Hamlin took the lead.

"Still two by two. Clear up behind that 96 if you want it. Clear four back."

On lap 65, Mikey was 33rd, David 12th, and Marcos 21st.

"Clear one back right there."

"All right, Mikey, if you can, give us feedback through the run, please," DW requested.

"All the way on the bottom, the 98."

"Feels like it's going to be more tight," Mikey said the car felt like it would be better. "Maybe. Maybe not, but maybe."

DW told Mikey to tell them through the run.

"Right now it's just pushing a little, but it was pushing a lot," Mikey said.

"Still inside. Still down there. Clear of him, all clear."

On lap 67, Mikey was 31st. He was 29th one lap later. Hornish Jr was blackflagged for sheet metal hanging off the car.

"Clear the 78. All clear. Still outside on your corner. Still there."

On lap 70, Mikey was 28th.

"Clear there, clear. Still there, still there. Clear clear clear."

Mikey was 27th on lap 71. David was 12th and Marcos 23rd.

"Clear the 1. Clear. One all the way at the bottom, at the bottom. You're clear, clear."

Stewart reclaimed the lead going into lap 73. Mikey was 24th, David 12th, and Marcos 20th.

"Still down there, 24's still down there. Clear, all clear. Looking low, inside. All the way at the bottom. Just looking, the 24. There you go. All clear, all clear."

"Good job. That's eleven laps on tires," Bootie said.

"Still there. 71's right there on your bumper, right there on your bumper. 77's going to be lame on the bottom. He's a lapped car with damage, middle of 3 and 4."

"Back to plowing now," Mikey reported.

Bootie said they'd take out wedge and air.

"Clear up to the 77. Still clear all clear, two back. Still out there, still there. Clear there, clear. Still clear, still clear."

By lap 75, Hamlin was back out front. Mikey was 25th, David 12th, and Marcos 22nd.

"Still outside, still there. 47's still outside. Still outside. Inside, looking low, inside. 44's still down there on your... Okay, bud, two by two. Everybody has help. Spin in front of you. He's all the way to the bottom, he's all the way to the bottom. You're good. Watch the 44. Watch the 44. The 1's smoking. You've got to get up to the top."

"I got front end damage pretty severe. My water pressure is good. You see any oil, smoke, Ty?"

Ty said they needed a lot of work but no smoke.

"Just try to push the hood down instead of popping it." Mikey said.

Bootie reiterated this to the crew.

"We need to clear the duct work, because my temperatures are going up."

Bootie said four tires, then splitter down.

"Be sure you get some air to it in a hurry. It's 250 now, and it's climbing."

"10-4."

The fourth caution was on lap 78. Kasey Kahne had run over David Stremme, collecting David, Mikey, Brian Vickers, Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Reed Sorenson, David Gilliland, Ryan Newman, and others.

Mikey asked for a tear-off too. "That right front fender will push down."

The #55 went to pit road. Mikey told Chris to sit on the hood.

"It's got stuff leaking," Chris said.

Bootie determined they needed to take the car to the garage.

"The 00 and the 12 are on pit road. Come on up, come on up," Ty said.

Bootie talked about getting bolts out of the radiator.

"On a split note, these are the worst brakes I've ever felt on a car. They're horrible. I can't do nothing with them," Mikey said while in the garage.

A crew member said to put water in it and see if it'll hold pressure. He went on to say they needed a patch for the right front fender. He said they'd drill some holes in the car.

Stewart led the restart, and the #55 was still in the garage.

Bootie told the crew to cut something and to put the nose piece on. A crew member said to put the old tires on to get the splitter to the right height. They talked about cutting off the radiator mount.

David lost his right front tire and hit the wall, drawing the fifth caution on lap 103. He had been 32nd, four laps down.

At 10:14pm, the #55 team tried to get the car cranked up again.

"All right, as soon as Michael's ready, guys, we're going to send him," Bootie said at 10:17pm.

"Michael's ready," Mikey said.

Bootie told him to get an up-to-speed lap, see how it's running, and come back in. "Okay, send the man. Let's go, let's go." He told his driver to take it easy and to go slow getting up to speed. "Way to work hard, guys."

"All right, bud. Just 4100, 4100. 4700. Sorry," Ty said.

Mikey headed back on track on lap 114. He was thirty-five laps down in 37th. Stewart led, David was in the garage sixteen laps down in 34th, and Marcos was 10th.

"Bootie, did you leave a radio in the garage?" someone asked.

"Yeah, that don't matter. Be quiet," Bootie replied.

Ty asked about minimum speed.

"I'll let you know in a second."

"We're way faster than minimum speed," Mikey said.

"Yeah. Yeah, Ty, we're two seconds faster than minimum speed," Bootie said. "Temps look okay, Michael? Anything stupid?"

"Everything's normal. Didn't really have a good chance to get through that wreck. I didn't know what happened."

Ty said they wrecked two-thirds down the straightaway.

Mikey complained that Ty could have said something to help.

Bootie said they'd stay in front of the #88 and the #71; they were five laps ahead of them.

"Spin behind you, spin behind you. Caution's out," Ty said.

The sixth caution was on lap 123. David Ragan went up into Kurt Busch and spun himself out.

"All the tape is blowing off the hood, as you might expect," Mikey said.

Bootie told the crew to get it off.

"I'm not sure why we put the tape on there a lot of times. I guess just to watch it blow off.

"Temperatures are 175, 180."

Bootie said Mikey's speed was plenty fast. "We'll just make sure everything's secure, keep rolling." He said to pit second time by. He let his driver know not to go when the jack drops so they could check everything.

"How many laps down are my?" Mikey asked.

Bootie said he wasn't on the box, so he couldn't see.

"35," someone else replied.

"You okay back there?" Ty asked after the stop.

"Yes," Mikey replied.

He said they were on one to go.

Stewart led the restart with 34 laps to go. Mikey was 35 laps down in 37th, and he went to pit road. David was 28 down in 35th, and Marcos was 10th.

With 33 laps to go, Jeff Burton took the lead. Stewart was back in the lead with 31 to go, and a tire was going down on Burton's #31.

"They're about twenty back. The first ten of them are single-file. Outside, outside. The first four of them. One more outside, is about ten back, ten back. Outside, outside."

Mikey was now 36 laps down, still in 37th.

"Still single file outside. The double file pack still fifteen back. Give them plenty of room. They're two by two behind you, two by two. Three more, three more. All right, clear there, back to some of the other wrecked cars. Two of them trying to look up top, the 34 and the 24. The 24 dropped off, clear three back. Coming outside. The 24's going to have a run outside. Got one up there with him. Two up there with him. Two back to two of them. Looking low, looking low. 77. Clear behind him."

After a long pause, Mikey said, "Outside, outside, Mike."

"Ty, you copy, man?" Bootie asked when Ty didn't respond to what Mikey said.

"Yeah, I got him," Ty replied.

"Either he's not watching or he can't talk."

"All right, 19 to go," said Ty. "All right, man, it's 15 to go. 15. Caution's out. Caution's out. Debris."

The seventh caution flag waved.

"Okay, guys, we're going to take fuel," Bootie said.

Mikey talked about something hanging off, and Bootie asked if it were a distraction. "It's... whatever, it doesn't matter. It's just flapping."

"Okay, guys, rip the rest of this shit off. Four tires and fuel," Bootie determined.

Cars pit under yellow.

"Okay, 4700 and second gear," Bootie reminded his driver.

"How many laps is the 00 ahead of me?" Mikey asked.

"Four I think. Four," Bootie replied.

Mikey went to his box.

"Everything looks fine with us. 4700, 4700," Bootie said. "What you need? A razor? A razor blade?"

Mikey said something about being waved around helping for future reference.

Ty warned that it would be wild. "Paying attention to that. Pace car's off. Green green green."

Stewart led the restart with 11 laps to go. Mikey was 37th, David 36th, and Marcos 9th.

"Ten to go. Ten."

Scott Speed hit the wall with 8 laps to go. He had tried to cut in front of AJ Allmendinger when the room wasn't there. The eighth caution came. Ryan Newman received the free pass.

"They slammed the wall over here in Turn 4. The 82 is riding the wall. Caution's out, caution's out."

"Okay, we'll just stay out, Michael," Bootie said.

"Just watch for debris where the 82 cut across the track in Turn 1," Ty warned.

"A couple more, bud."

"10-4."

"They're restarting with four to go."

Stewart led the restart. David and Mikey were 36th and 37th, and Marcos was 8th.

"All right, pace car's off. Green green green. 00's going to be outside you there.

"3 to go, 3 to go.

"2 to go."

Kyle Busch took the lead going into the last lap.

"Last lap."

Tony Stewart wrecked Kyle Busch for the win.

"Big crash coming to the finish line. Big crash. Stay down, stay down, stay down. Holey moley magoaley."

"Okay, great effort all week, everybody," Bootie then said something to Mikey.

"Goodness gracious. The 18 got turned. He's okay. He's walking away from it. The 9 got into him, and he went about ten feet in the air."

"I don't know where Robby Gordon finished, but he ran around in the back all day," Mikey said. He commented on the condition of the car.

"You're right. He did. He tore his whole left side off," Bootie replied.

"Man, we need that tech box over here, if someone can bring it," someone said. "Anybody copy on the tech box."

"Coming. On its way."

"10-4," Bootie said.

Mikey finished 36 laps down in 37th. David was 33 laps down in 36th, and Marcos finished 6th.
