Sam's Town 300 - 2/28/09


After winning the pole in his first Nationwide Series start, Scott Speed finished 40th in the Sam's Town 300. His Michael Waltrip Racing #99 Red Bull Toyota got caught up in a wreck on Lap 22. He finished 188 laps down and in the garage.

The call to start engines came at 4:37pm ET, and the green flag waved nine minutes later. Scott Speed led the field and held onto the top spot. Kevin Harvick dropped inside of the #99 and passed going into lap 3. Scott was now 2nd. He reported that the car was tight.

Denny Hamlin spun, drawing the first caution on lap 7. He had just passed Scott when he overdrove his #20, and the car went around. Mike Bliss tangled with Brad Keselowski, sending Bliss spinning. Cars pit under yellow.

Racing resumed on lap 14 with Harvick leading and Scott in 3rd.

The yellow flag waved one lap later for Keselowski. He had a left front tire rub, and the tire went flat.

Harvick led the lap 20 restart with Scott in 3rd.

Kyle Busch was racing Harvick for the lead on lap 22 when he got loose on the low side and spun. Scott had nowhere to go but into Busch's #18. Brendan Gaughan also got spun out. The #99 sustained significant front end damage. NASCAR brought out the red flag at 5:11pm ET. The red flag was lifted ten minutes later, and cars made stops when pit road opened. The #99 was in the garage.

Greg Biffle went on to win the wreck marred race while Scott finished in the garage, 188 laps down in 40th.
